My Disability Matters is a tech startup providing an online social community / social media platform replacement for the disability sector.
The company was founded by Dale Reardon who has been blind since the age of 17 and believes that the disability community needs a place to gather for discussion around disability issues with a community willing to share information and experiences.
It was this belief that led Dale to create My Disability Matters, a platform that has now grown to have thousands of members from across the globe and with a wide range of disabilities, including physical, sensory, autism, developmental and mental illness.
In addition, My Disability Matters includes many members who do not have a disability but are carers, family members and friends of people who do live with disability or work in the disability sector.
With such a strong social mission it is great to see Dale Reardon and My Disability Matters be recognised by The World Summit Awards Australia that select and promote Australia’s Best Digital Innovations with positive impact on local society.
By being nominated for this award My Disability Matters will go on to represent Australia at the World Summit Awards that is operated by the United Nations. This is part of the UN’s charter under their sustainable development goals framework and is used to recognise and promote tech that is providing social benefits and wellbeing.
In addition to The World Summit Awards, My Disability Matters has been nominated as a finalist by the WEGO Health Awards. This nomination is in recognition of those who have created an online community to help facilitate important conversations in the community.
In a world where we often see tech success celebrated by the latest funding or acquisition news it’s nice to be reminded of the positive impact technology can have on everyone’s lives, regardless of their background.
As Dale has shown with My Disability Matters technology can make a lasting impact on people’s lives and help bring together individuals who may not have others in their immediate circle of friends who are dealing with the same challenges they are.
What My Disability Matters has been able to provide is an environment where people can meet new people and create new friends, find support from others within the community and ensure that important issues are discussed and listened to. Therefore, it’s no surprise that Dales works has been recognized by both these organisations.
